The Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme was started during the year 1985-86 and is managed by   Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization  under Ministry of Human Resource Development,  Department of School Education & Literacy, Govt. of India.

      School ViewAs part of the programme of action of the new education policy, 1986, Govt. of India launched the scheme under the pioneer of Shri Rajeev Gandhi, the  former Prime Minister of India to set up Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in all the districts of the country in order to provide opportunities to the children with special talents to proceed at a faster pace by making quality education available to them irrespective of their capacity to pay for it.

OBJECTIVES OF SAMITI ARE:

*       To provide good quality modern education including a strong component of culture, inculcation of values, awareness of the environment, adventure activities and physical education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas.

*       To ensure that students attain a reasonable level of competency in three languages.

*       To promote national integration through migration of students from Hindi to non-Hindi speaking State and vice – versa.

*       To serve in each district as focal point for improvement of quality of school education in general through sharing of experiences and facilities.      

     Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kollam was started on 1-12-1994  with 80 students both  boys and girls. The school is now functioning in its own site from 30-04-2003  onwards at Kottarakkara.
